Random Reads - January

Though I haven't signed up to any challenges this year, I still wanted to  make sure I read a good variety of different books in 2013. I've seen that quite a few bloggers enjoy Random Reads, hosted by I'm Loving Books, and I really liked the idea, so I knocked up a giant spreadsheet of all the books I own, found a random number generator on the Internet and decided to join in!

For my first ever Random Read, the fickle finger of fate has selected:

Border Songs by Jim Lynch
As with so many impulsive ebook purchases, I don't really remember downloading this one, but it looks pretty good so I must have known what I was doing! Here's what Amazon has to say about it:

Brandon Vanderkool thinks in pictures; he used to think everyone did. Six-foot-eight and dyslexic, he is not an obvious candidate for the Border Patrol, which polices the frontier between the United States and Canada, but somehow, as he ambles round the forest bird-watching, he seems to stumble upon every illegal immigrant and drug trafficker in the area. Meanwhile, his father is dealing with diseased dairy cows, his mother battles encroaching dementia, and their neighbour's daughter Madeline flirts with the cannabis underworld..."Border Songs" is an extraordinary love story and a gently satirical celebration of the coincidental and the miraculous.

Not a bad start to Random Reads, and I look forward to seeing what else is in store for the coming months.

    1. Yes, this is just what we need to ease our challenge cravings without actually signing up to any challenges!

  2. Oooh, I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on with this one (Random Reads is SUCH a good idea - I haven't done it for the last couple of months but I'll try to remember in February!). I read 'The Highest Tide' by Jim Lynch and absolutely loved it - about a boy who adores the ocean, who finds a giant squid washed up on the beach and gets swept up in a scientific study of changing oceans AND has to come of age along the way... I don't remember all the particulars but I know it was one of my favourite reads of that year! Have fun... :)

  3. I love the fact it threw up a book you don't really remember! I really like the idea of random reads and plan to join in later in the year. I have a crate of books that I have earmarked for the 50 page test to sift through first...

    1. Doesn't everyone have books they don't remember buying? Am I the only one who goes on 2am kindle shopping sprees while barely conscious? Oh, the shame!

The 50 page test is a good idea, but I think I'd feel the need to continue even if I wasn't keen, on the "I've started so I'll finish" principle. But yay for Random Reads - it'd be lovely if you joined in too!

  4. I think this Random Reads idea is a great one - I'm going to try it myself (but not committing to the challenge). ;-)

I hope you enjoy Border Songs!
